Ask the Professional:
Q. Does my house have to have a continuous colour scheme throughout, even upstairs?
-Monica: Richmond Hill Ontario
A. Monica,
That is mostly a personal preference. I always tell my clients that the main floor should flow. This does not necessairly mean having the same colours in each room- However it does mean having a balance and achieving a sense of harmony in each room. For example, the accent colour used in the kitchen, should be apparent in the living room rug, or in the art. There should be repetition of colour to engage the eye, and keep harmony throughout.
The upper level is a personal space. This is where you and your family stay. Therefore the colours should flow in the common areas, but the bedroom is a whole other ball game, especially if you have kids! Spaces should be personalized, individualized to suit your function, your taste, your personality. And remember, it is only paint...you can change it!
As an example, as you can see the pictures below, we have used the same accent colours (orange and brown) throughout the condo, especially in the common areas. We have kept the accent pillows similar in all rooms (solid and stripe) and black and white art work throughout to keep common grounds and uniformity throughout. As a general rule of thumb, the smaller the space, the most important the flow and uniformity is. Without that soft flow, the condo will look smaller and choppy without a sense of style.
